This branding and wayfinding study explored how a cohesive visual identity could strengthen the trail’s presence across its many entry points, intersections, and community connections. The system considers the experience of users moving through rural farmland, wooded preserves, and suburban town centers, developing a flexible graphic language that responds to the trail’s shifting environments while maintaining a consistent and recognizable identity.
Inspired by the textures, movement, and seasonal rhythms of Midwestern prairie landscapes, the proposed identity system uses organic forms, layered patterns, and natural color palettes to reflect the character of the region. The resulting branding and wayfinding strategy helps orient users along the corridor while reinforcing the Prairie Trail as both a transportation route and a shared landscape that connects people, nature, and community across McHenry County.
